Two years after Hurricane Katrina
on March 18, 2007 after a 19-hour bus ride, I arrived in New Orleans; as a volunteer.
During my time in the N.O. I met survivors of Katrina, people who had weary sighs along with a relentless strength to stay in a place that they knew as home. People who were dedicated to rebuilding their life and their culture after such a devastating catastrophe.
The intimate conservations I shared with New Orleanians were more then discussing devastation of the storm. New Orleanians offered me words of inspiration and encouragement. It was an encouragement that stressed the importance of me being a leader and a fighter for my people, my community, and my culture.
For me tonight’s recollection of my journey to New Orleans inspired my new blog series. As I begin my journey as an educator. I am passionate about teaching students how to connect their stories to their community; then to all of humanity.
I want to share my experiences with you just like the New Orleanians did with me. While my experiences are unique and personal, there is a resemblance in my personal journey to yours.
I am hoping my words to you will mirror the encouragement, the inspiration, and the empowerment that I felt from the words spoken to me by the mouths of New Orleanians.
